An ordinary mechanical switch closes a contact: the key is either down or it is not. A magnetic switch carries a magnet, and a sensor underneath measures how far that magnet has moved. The board therefore knows the exact depth of every key at every moment — which is what makes everything below possible, and why there is no contact to wear out or bounce.
Anywhere from 0.2 mm to 3.8 mm of travel with Gateron Double-Rail switches, or 0.2 to 3.3 mm with the Keychron Ultra-Fast Lime, resolved to 0.1 mm. A shallow setting on the keys you game with, a deep one on the rest of the board so a resting finger does not fire a letter — and it is set per key, not per keyboard.
With rapid trigger on, a key releases the moment it begins to travel back up rather than at a fixed point, so repeated presses come faster. Alongside it: one key holding up to four commands at different depths, last-keystroke prioritisation for opposing direction keys, and analogue gamepad output, where how far you press decides how far the character leans.
The standard K10 HE is a full aluminium body at about 1320 g. The special edition adds a wooden frame around it, at about 1310 g and a few millimetres wider. Both sit on an aluminium plate, and neither is a keyboard that slides around the desk.
Inside: EVA foam under the PCB, an EPDM film between plate and board, a PET film across the bottom case, and a silicone acoustic pad below that. The point of all four is to stop an aluminium box behaving like one — the bottom-out lands flat instead of ringing.
Switches pull out and push in without a soldering iron — with one condition worth knowing before you buy: the Gateron Double-Rail version takes Gateron Double-Rail magnetic switches, and the Keychron Ultra-Fast Lime version takes Ultra-Fast Lime. Magnetic switches are not interchangeable across families the way MX-style mechanical ones are.
The standard version comes in Cherry profile with shine-through legends so the backlight reads through them; the special editions use the taller, spherical OSA profile, not shine-through. Both are double-shot PBT — the legend is a second piece of plastic rather than paint, and PBT resists the shine that ABS picks up under a fingertip.
A toggle moves the board between macOS and Windows, the extra modifier keycaps for both are in the box, and a separate layout is stored on the keyboard for each system — so the switch is one flick, not a remapping session.
Actuation points, rapid trigger, the four-command action keys, key mapping and the backlight are all configured in the Keychron Launcher web app — no installer, and the same page on Windows, macOS and Linux. The settings are written to the keyboard, so they travel with it.
Twenty-two or more backlight modes, including plain static white for people who want to see the legends and nothing else. Per-key RGB sets every key individually; Mix RGB splits the board into two zones with different effects.
